What is an AI calling agent?
An AI calling agent is software that dials a phone number, listens to the person who answers, decides what to say, and speaks back in a natural voice, so it can run a real conversation such as a sales follow-up or a callback booking without a human on the line. It records the call, tags the outcome, and hands anything that needs a person to your team.
How does an AI calling agent work?
Four systems run in a loop for the whole call, each finishing in a fraction of a second so the conversation feels live:
- Telephony places the call over the mobile network and streams the audio both ways.
- Speech recognition turns what the caller says into text, in the language they spoke, including a mix of Hindi and English.
- A language model reads the transcript so far, the script, and the rules it must follow, and writes the next reply. It also decides when to book a callback, when to stop, and when to hand off.
- Voice synthesis speaks the reply in a consistent voice. Good agents cache the opening line so the call starts instantly.
Around that loop sit the parts that make it usable: a dialler that manages the list and retries, a detector for voicemail and dead lines, guardrails that stop the agent from saying things it must not, and reporting that writes the outcome to a dashboard or CRM.
What is it good at?
- First calls at volume. Following up every enquiry the same day, reaching a list of 2,000 in an afternoon, or reconfirming appointments.
- Short, structured conversations. Is the person interested, when should we call back, is this still the right number.
- Consistency. The 500th call of the day sounds like the first, and every call is recorded and summarised.
What is it bad at?
- Negotiation and complex objections. It should book a human, not improvise.
- Noisy lines and bad audio. Speech recognition degrades when a television is playing behind the caller. Good agents detect this and re-ask once rather than guessing.
- Long monologues. Callers hang up. Keep every turn to one or two sentences.
What should I check before buying one in India?
- Hindi in Devanagari. Ask to hear the agent say आपका. If it sounds like an English speaker, the script is romanized and it will sound that way to every customer.
- Callback parsing. Say "परसों दोपहर" and check the booked time.
- Guardrails. Ask what happens if a caller volunteers an OTP or card number. The right answer is that the agent refuses and moves on.
- Compliance. Who registers with TRAI's DLT, who scrubs against the DND list, and in whose name are the numbers.
- Billing unit. Per connected call or per minute, and whether unanswered attempts are charged.
- What your team sees. Recordings, transcripts, dispositions and a callback worklist, not just a call log.
How is Samparkk different?
Samparkk is built only for Indian outbound sales calls in Hindi and English. Scripts are authored in Devanagari, the callback parser understands Indian time expressions, guardrails are fixed and not editable per script, and pricing is per connected call with unanswered attempts free. See how it speaks Hindi and what it costs.
Related questions
Is an AI calling agent the same as an IVR?
No. An IVR plays recorded menus and waits for key presses. An AI calling agent listens to free speech and replies in sentences, so the caller talks normally.
Does an AI calling agent need a script?
Yes. The script gives it the opening, the offer, the objections and the rules. The language model handles the wording turn by turn, but it stays inside the script.
Can it leave voicemails?
Good agents detect voicemail and hang up rather than leaving a monologue, then retry later. Samparkk does this by default.
